Story Samples - "Melissa's Fairy"
(This is a sample of this story. You must purchase "Kid Tales" to read the entire story.)
"But Mommy, I
don’t want to go. I don’t know anybody!” Melissa cried to her mom. Melissa and
her family had recently moved to a new town. She was very upset that she had to
leave her home, her school, and all of her friends. Today was her first day at a
new school, and she hadn’t met any new friends since they moved in a week ago.
“It’ll be fine Melissa,” her mother responded. “You’ll meet lots of new
friends and before you know it, you’ll be happy we moved
here.”
“Yeah, right” Melissa said, obviously not believing her mother. “I don’t
understand why we had to move anyway.”
Melissa’s mom had been saving a special gold pin to give to Melissa on
her birthday. The pin was a little fairy, and it had been in the family for
several generations. The little gold fairy was supposed to watch over whoever
wore it. Melissa’s mom thought that she might feel a little better if she could
wear it on her first day of school.
Melissa sat at the kitchen table waiting for her mother to return. She
wasn’t sure what her mom was going to give her, but she didn’t see how anything
could make her feel better. She stirred her cereal and stared blankly out the
window of the kitchen.
“Here you go, Sweetheart. I was saving this to give to you on your
birthday, but maybe it will cheer you up a little.” Melissa’s mom handed her a small white
box, wrapped up with a pink ribbon.
“What is it, Mom?” Melissa asked.
“Go ahead and open it sweetheart. It’s something very special.”
“It was my pin, Melissa. Just like it was my mother’s, and my
grandmother’s, and my grandmother’s mother before her. It has been in the family
for many generations. Now it’s your turn, and someday, hopefully, you will have
a daughter to give it to. This fairy will watch over you whenever you wear it. I
thought it might come in handy during your first day at your new school.”
Melissa’s mom was smiling at her, and Melissa thought she might start to cry.
“Thank you, Mommy. It’s really beautiful. I’m never going to take it off.
Will you help me put it on?” Melissa was very happy to have the pin, and she
suddenly wasn’t so scared about going to school. Her mother helped her pin the
fairy to her new blue flowered dress, and she finished her breakfast quickly so
that they could leave for school.
Melissa’s mom drove up to the front of the school and kissed Melissa
goodbye. Melissa grabbed her lunchbox and her book bag and walked up the tall
front steps of the school. She stopped for a minute to wave goodbye to her
mother, and touched the fairy that was now pinned to her dress. “It’s going to
be OK,” Melissa said to herself. “I’m going to make lots of
friends.”
As she turned to walk into the building she heard a small voice say,
“Yes, it will be OK Melissa. I’ll make sure of it.”
Melissa stopped suddenly and looked behind her. She thought her mother
had come back, but she didn’t see anyone anywhere around her. “Who said that?”
Melissa called out, suddenly feeling even more nervous.
“Who? Where are you?” Melissa said turning around and around. She was
afraid that she was starting to look a little crazy.
“Right here, honey, look down.”
Melissa looked at the ground but still didn’t see anyone. Then, just as
she started to look up, she saw a movement out of the corner of her eye. She
thought she saw her pin move! She looked a little closer at the pin, but it
wasn’t moving. She was about to look around again when the pin suddenly spoke to
her!
